LAB FORCES IN FLUIDS, PRESSURE
INVESTIGATING SIPHONS

HOME

INTRODUCTION - fill the blank for full credit - you can use the word twice - the sentence have to make sense

bank:  siphon, depth, area, liquid, siphon, flow, tube, gravity, pressure, lower, forces, force

A siphon is a _______ filled with a ___________ that connects 2 containers (see image above). Liquid can flow through the siphon from one container to the other. The direction of this flow depends on the  ___________ that act on the liquid. One of these forces is ___________. If one container is higher than the other, the other, the force of gravity will cause liquid to flow down through the ________from the higher container into the ______one.

Fluid pressure due to fluid _______ also affects the flow through a siphon. Pressure is the amount of ________ per unit __________. All liquid exerts pressure against their container. THe _________ exerted on the bottom of a beaker is due to the weight of the ____________ above it. Therefore, fluid pressure  due to fluid depth is also related to the force of gravity.  If the two container have different levels of liquid, the liquid will ______ through the siphon from the container with greater fluid depth (and pressure) to the container will less fluid _____ (and pressure).

In this investigation, you will predict how water will flow through a _____________. Then, you will perform an experiment to test your prediction.

DISCUSSION: predict what will happen - then you will check your prediction
DO NOT DO THE EXPERIMENT YET.

1) Based on the text above, predict how the water will flow through a siphon that connects each of the following pairs of identical beakers.
(for question A, B, C) Don't ask me. discuss with your partners. DONT RUSH. RE-READ THE INTRO ABOVE.

A) Both beaker contain equal volumes of water, but one beaker is at a higher elevation than the other (think gravity)
predict the flow of the liquid in the siphon (if any flow)

PROCEDURE - Use safety goggles. avoid breakage ! be careful. try not to spill water. don't work next to computers, notebook, anything that can be damaged by water. USE 600mL beakers.
You have to be 3.  2 students will hold one beaker each. 1 student will take care of the tube. Get goggle.

step1: Add approximately 275mL of water to each beaker.

step2: Pace the flexible tubing on the sink. Hold one end of the tubing under the faucet and allow water to run through the tubing. When water begins to flow out the lower end of the tubing, use your finger to block the lower end. When the entire length of the tubing has filled with water, use another finger to cover the upper end, Be sure that no air remains in the tubing. Do not allow the water to flow out of the tubing. Do not allow the water to flow out of the tubing.

step3: Keeping the ends of the tubing covered, place one end of the tubing in the bottom of each beaker. Remove your finger from the ends of the tube only, after bot ends of the tube are submerged. Observe the beakers for 1 minute. Note any changes in the water level in the beakers. Record your observation in the data table.

step4: Remove the elevated beaker. Add or remove water from each beaker so that one beaker contains 400mL of water and the other contains 100mL of water. Place both beakers on the table. Repeat steps  2 and 3.

step5: Add or remove water from each beaker so that each beaker contains 300mL of water. PLace both beaker on the table. Repeat step2 and step3.

ANALYSIS

1) Did your observations support your hypothesis ?

2) What force was responsible for the result you observed in step 3?

3) What was responsible for the result you observed in step 4?

4) Explain what you would have to do in order to move the water from the lower beaker to the upper beaker in step 3 ?

5) Suppose 2 beakers sitting side by side are filled to the same depth, but one beaker is wider than the other. What would you expect to observe when the beakers are connected by a siphon? If you are not sure of your answer try. now.
