INTRODUCTION -

Large shopping malls and colleges campuses post maps so visitors can find their way around. To understand the scales of such maps, people note the distance between themselves and a local landmark and then compare this with the distance with on the map between "you are here"and the landmark. In making this comparison, the visitors develops an intuitive scale for the map and is able to judge the distance required to travel to the desired shop or building. In this activity you will develop a scale for a world map and will then use this to estimate the distances between major cities.

The map below shows the locations of major cities in the world..

The table below, however, includes, only the distance between Washington, D.C., and Berlin, Germany (6,713km). Use this information to develop a scale for the map and estimate the distances between Washington D.C., and the other cities specified on the map.

SCALE of MAP : 1mm =    _______ km

1) Alice in wonderlands.
At some point Alice can shrinks by eating mushrooms.
She gets to 9 inches tall so she can get inside a small house 4 feet high. If Alice is normally 50 inches tall, how tall would the house have been in Alice's normal world ?

2) By 2010, it may possible for people to travel in space, at a cost of about $150,000 for a 150 pound person. Find the ratio of cost to the number of pounds.

3) The below table shows what it costs to make money (to be continued)

Are the ratios equal ? why ?

4)To conserve water during a drought , a city's water department is offering homeowners a rebate on their water bill of $1.50 per square foot of lawn that is removed from a yard and replaced with drought-resistant plants/ What rebate would a homeowner receive who replaced a rectangular lawn area that is 10ft wide and 20 ft long ?

5) a drip irrigation system is installed around a circular flower garden that is 4ft in diameter. If the irrigation system costs $2.50 per foot, find the cost to place the irrigation system around the flower garden.

6) A landscape architect recommends 0.1 gallon of water per day for each square foot of lawn.
How many gallons of water should be used per day on a rectangular lawn area that is 33ft by 42ft

7) December 2008.
A Lebanese farmer dug out that it seems to be the largest potatoes in the world.

The article says the potato is 11.3kg.
Convert to pounds. A potato has a density of about 1.2 g/cm3
Find the volume.
