PROBLEM
Can we find the density of water, corn syrup and oil ?
PROCEDURE
you will need graduated cylinders (to 50mL), plate balance (in grams) , corn syrup, oil
step1: Find the mass of the empty cylinder. Report in
TABLE1.step2: Find the cylinder to the 50mL level with water. Find the mass of the cylinder + water. report in
TABLE1.
step3: Empty the cylinder.
step4:Repeat the 3 steps above with oil. Report the results in
TABLE 1. step5: Carefully
Clean thoroughly the cylinder with soap. dry.
step6: Repeat the steps 1 to 3 with corn syrup. Report measurements in TABLE 1.
Clean the cylinder with soap. dry.
TABLE 1 | WATER | OIL | CORN SYRUP |
| mass of the empty cylinder | ______g | ________g | ________g |
mass of the cylinder filled with 50mL of liquid. | _______ g | ______ g | ______ g |
mass of 50mL of liquid alone (subtract the mass of the cylinder) | ______ g | ______ g | ______ g |
| density | ______ g/mL | ______ g/mL | ______ g/mL |
CLEAN ALL THE MATERIALS BEFORE GOING TO THE ANALYSIS PART>
ANALYSIS1) Let's see how close you are.
A)Water
has a density of 1g/mL. Find the percentage error. Find the difference
between the true value (1) and yours. ________g/mL
Then divide by the true value (1). Then multiply by 100. percentage error = _______%. How good you are?
B) Density of oil is about 0.895g/mL. Are you close? _______________
C) The density of heavy corn syrop is about 1.360g/mL. Find the percentage error.
Find the difference between the true value (.895) and yours. ________g/mL
Then divide by the true value (.895). Then multiply by 100. percentage error = _______%. How good you are?
2) If you mix water + oil + corn syrup. Will the liquid mix ? what will happen ? draw the situation.
(based on their density).
3) Can you predict the mass of 30mL of water ? (using a density of 1g/mL). mass predicted ___________g
(hint: mass = volume x density)
Check your prediction by finding the mass of 30mL of water. mass calculated______________ g
(remember first find the mass of the empty cylinder, then cylinder filled with 30mL waterthen take the difference of the masses to find the mass of water)GOING FURTHER1) What is the density of a liquid if 75cm
3 of it has a mass of 93g ?
2) how big a bottle is needed to old 5.0 g of mercury? (mercury is as metal, but it is liquid at normal temperature)
Mercury has a density of 13.6g/cm
3. (find the volume)
3)
To determine the density of a liquid, an empty graduated cylinder is
placed on a balance, and its mass is found to be 120g. The liquid is
then added, up to 100cm
3 mark, and the cylinder placed back on the balance. If the balance reads 265g, what is the density of the liquid ?
hint: find volume of liquid, then use density = mass/volume4) What is the mass of 1 liter (that is 1,000 cm
3) of alcohol, whose density is 0.83g/cm
3 ?
5) Oil does
not mix with water. When an oil tanker spills oil the oil floats
on the surface of the ocean. Why does oil float and not sink?6)
The mass
of an empty graduated cylinder is 70 grams. When it is filled
with 50 ml of liquid it's mass 120 grams. What is the mass of
just the liquid? What is the density of the liquid?
